Walking near Metrotown Mall, a bright red exterior with a large crown chicken character catches your eye. This is the popular Taiwanese chain Zhengxin Chicken Steak (正新鸡排). A brand familiar in mainland China and Taiwan has finally made its way to Canada!

The crispy fried chicken, fresh lettuce, and fluffy sweet bun make for an amazing combination. The chicken coating is especially thick, giving it a satisfying crunch. With every bite, juicy meat juices spread throughout. It's more substantial than it looks, and one burger is a satisfyingly filling size.

Inside the store, self-service “Monk Fruit and Chrysanthemum Tea” was available. I tried it for the first time this visit, a subtly sweet, refreshing drink perfect after fried food. Its gentle flavor evokes memories of Taiwanese street stalls.

The interior has a bright, pop atmosphere and is filled with a liveliness reminiscent of Taiwanese street food culture. The red and yellow interior is accented by a glowing neon sign featuring a chicken character, creating a fun, theme park-like atmosphere. The ceiling lighting is bright, and the menu is clearly displayed above the counter. Green chairs and white tables create a clean yet welcoming atmosphere. It was a bright and friendly space where you could easily stop by, whether alone or with a group.

Zhengxin recreates authentic Taiwanese street food. Crispy chicken burgers paired with subtly sweet chrysanthemum tea. For anyone in Vancouver craving that “Taiwan night market vibe,” this is a spot I highly recommend.
